So What Is The Difference Between A Moth And A Butterfly?

the basics are as follows:

Similarities

  • Scales on wings
  • Both undergo complete metamorphosis from egg to caterpillar, chrysalis (cocoon) to adult
  • Both have compound eyes, although the types differ

Differences

  • Antenna size, shape, and type
  • The folding of wings (resting posture)
  • Moths have a frenulum, which joins the forewing to the hindwing. Butterflies do not
  • Primarily diurnal (butterflies) vs. nocturnal (moths)-- though not always
  • A moth makes a cocoon and a butterfly makes a chrysalis
  • Butterflies tend to have a more slender body than moths
  • Diet
There are no universal characteristics that divide butterflies and moths, so the identification of both can be quite difficult.
